The Truth About Selling Your Antiques: Valuations, Clearances, and Fair Play

We’ve all stood in a quiet room at some point, surrounded by a lifetime of collected memories, wondering what comes next. Maybe you’re clearing out a relative's loft, helping a parent downsize their home in the South Lakes, or navigating the emotional weight of sorting through an estate. Among the boxes, you find a glint of silver, a set of mid-century dining chairs, or a strange, heavy piece of studio pottery. Almost instantly, a wave of questions hits you. You wonder what it's worth, who you can actually trust to give you a straight answer, and how to avoid getting taken for a ride.

At the Emporium, we believe that the antique world shouldn't feel like a mysterious, exclusive club with hidden rules. We don't just sell history here; we buy it too, and we want to make the entire process feel simple, supportive, and completely honest. Whether you have a single curiosity you're ready to part with, a whole collection of vintage toys, or you need someone to handle a full, compassionate house clearance, we are here to help guide you through it.

To do that properly, we need to talk openly about the part of the business that most people feel a bit awkward bringing up — how we (the trade world) actually value your items.

The Reality Check: What You See Online vs. What a Dealer Pays

Let’s look at the elephant in the room. If you search for an old vase or an antique watch on eBay or Etsy, or if you happen to spot something similar on Bargain Hunt, you might see a price tag of two hundred pounds. It is entirely natural to assume that is what a dealer will pay you for yours. But we want to be completely transparent about how the trade works behind the scenes so you never feel misled.

When an item sits on a shelf in our emporium with a price tag, that figure has to cover a lot of quiet work. It reflects the cost of renting space in the building, the hours spent cleaning, restoring, or researching the item, card transaction fees, the commission the seller pays when it eventually sells and the very real chance that the piece might sit on display for six months before the perfect buyer walks through the door. When we or our traders make you an offer, it will be a fair trade price. This is the figure that allows a small, independent business to take on the risk, invest their time, and still make a viable living. We will always talk you through this math with a smile, showing you exactly how we arrived at our valuation.

It’s also worth talking about the auction route, which is another option we often discuss with people. While we have some excellent local auction houses, it’s important to understand how the economics actually play out there before you commit. First, there is no guarantee an auction house will even take your item on; they have to curate their sales and will often reject pieces if they don't fit their current catalogs. Second, the double-sided fees can be a real shock. Typically, both the buyer and the seller are charged around 27% in premiums and commissions.

To put that into perspective, if you have an item with an estimated value of £200, it might realistically fetch a hammer price of £150 in the room. The buyer will end up paying about £190 once their premium is added, but after the auction house takes their 27% cut from your end, you will only walk away with around £110. When you factor in the waiting, the transportation, the risk of the item not selling at all, and the final deductions, you often end up no better off financially than accepting a direct trade offer—and you’ve had to deal with a mountain of extra hassle and risk.

A Friendly Hand with Clearances and Collections

If you do decide that it’s time to move some things on, we try to make the next steps as gentle and straightforward as possible. You are always welcome to wrap up your items and bring them down to the shop in Kendal for a chat (just one box at a time please!) or email us pictures over of any bigger items. We offer free, friendly, and honest valuations with absolutely no pressure. If we look at your piece and realise it isn't quite right for our floor, we’ll tell you exactly where it would sell best, even if that means advising you to keep it or list it privately to get the best return.

When it comes to full house and estate clearances, we know that we are often entering people's lives at incredibly difficult times. We approach clearances with respect, patience, and efficiency. We’ll sit down with you, walk through the property, and assess the contents. If there are sellable antiques, furniture, or vintage items, we offset their trade value directly against the physical cost of clearing the house. In fact, if the home is filled with great vintage stock, we often end up paying you for the privilege of clearing the space, leaving the property swept, tidy, and ready for its next chapter.

The same goes for those massive, half-forgotten collections in the garage or loft. If you’ve inherited a mountain of old tools, industrial lighting, or vintage toys, selling them one by one online can quickly turn into a part-time job of packaging, shipping, and dealing with lost parcels. We buy these job lots outright, taking the entire headache off your shoulders in a single afternoon.

Keeping the History of the Lakes Moving

Because our emporium is home to over sixty independent traders, we have an incredibly wide and eclectic appetite. One traditional antique shop might only look at pristine Victorian mahogany, but our collective buys everything from Roman coins and 1970s chrome lamps to rustic garden planters and vintage militaria. We almost always have a specialist who is actively hunting for exactly what you have.

If you have some pieces that are ready for their next adventure, let’s make it easy. Pop into the shop this week for a brew and a chat, drop us an email with a few photos, or give us a ring to arrange a home visit. Let's work together to keep the heritage of the Lake District moving.
